Wow. What a crazy last couple of weeks. It's been a while since my last post and we've got a land to cover…so, here we go.
Took my last final on Thursday night, completing my first year of my masters. Film school is something I have been dreaming of doing since I was a kid and this is the most grounded I have been my entire life and I couldn't be happier. Screened my first year project, "It's a Hot Day and I Hate My Wife," and I'm gearing up for the festival circuit this summer.
I shot a gig for Arden B, www.ardenb.com, last weekend, filming the fashion shoot for their new fall campaign. Going into it--I had an idea of the level of this production—I've been on sets from Sydney to New York to LA to San Diego but the chance to work with Angelo as well as some other brilliant talent was fantastic. Was on set by nine and slowly watched the pieces all come together. Miranda Kerr (a new face for Victoria's Secret) was our smokin' model and Diego Uchitel, www.jedroot.com, was our photographer. Watching him in action was amazing. Shot after shot I saw this man capture images that will be gracing the pages of Vogue, Cosmo, Elle, etc.—amazing.
I am in pre-production of some webisodes of The Bottom Dollar, www.thebottomdollar.tv, a webcast; I have been working on for the last year or so. Trying to get up and cover the Pacific NW if we can lock in the budget and time allows. I've got two more kickass projects in the pipeline kicking off the summer with a bang.
That catches things up on me—now it's time to turn my attention to current events. Wow. Again. Wow. What a weird combination of shitshows. Our government continues to crumble with no sense of accountability. The president continues to refuse to fund out troops while the Democratic majority House and Senate scramble around trying to compromise. QUIT COMPROMISING. Send that embarrassment of a President that same damned bill over and over and over until he is forced by the will of the American people to take accountability for stirring up a hornets nest that his grandchildren's grandchildren will still be dealing with and get the hell out of Iraq.
What to even say about our current and corrupt Attorney General? I think it is a major mistake to hold a vote of no confidence and this recent account of heading into the hospital room of then Attorney General Ashcroft to pressure him to approve domestic wire taping. What is this, the Sopranos? Ashcroft's wife was forced to call the FBI in order to protect her husband from Bushy's personal lawyer and his Chief of Staff—can we all agree the WIRE TAPS ARE ILLEGAL??! Screw the firing of 8 US Attorneys, how about a vote of no confidence in President Bush, or as he's now referring to himself, "The Commander Guy." Oh yes, that's his newest title he's given himself. Commander Guy.
It's amazing how many Americans don't seem to understand that these rich, pasty-faced thugs don't give a shit about this country. They care about making their cronies rich and making themselves richer while fleecing the rest of us.
And how can I not mention the passing of our dear friend Jerry Falwell? Christopher Hitchens summed it up perfectly when he said, "If you gave Jerry Falwell an enema you could bury him in a match box." Here's just a few gems of crazy he left out there for generations to enjoy…gonna miss ya Jerry.
"The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country." -Well, Jerry, it was actually the Devil AND our forefathers who created the foundation of this country.
"You've got to kill the terrorists before the killing stops. And I'm for the president to chase them all over the world. If it takes 10 years, blow them all away in the name of the Lord." -Now there's a Christian statement if I've ever heard one.
"AIDS is the wrath of a just God against homosexuals. To oppose it would be like an Israelite jumping in the Red Sea to save one of Pharaoh's charioteers ... AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals." -Riiiight, cause gay dance clubs are rampant through West Africa."
"The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked…I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way -- all of them who have tried to secularize America -- I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this [9/11] happen.'" Anybody else you wanna lump in there, Jerr? Oh, I don't know, maybe an administration that was given everything but the flight numbers months before 9/11?
And the classic….
"He is purple -- the gay pride color; and his antenna is shaped like a triangle -- the gay pride symbol. The character, whose voice is that of a boy, has been found carrying a red purse in many episodes and has become a favorite character among gay groups worldwide. ... Role modeling the gay lifestyle is damaging to the moral lives of children. These subtle depictions are no doubt intentional and parents are warned to be alert to these elements of the series." --Outing the Teletubbies' Tinky Winky in 1999.
Jesus. It's time to get our country back. If you don't believe me, tune in to any of these Republican debates. When I hear the discourse these people are having it embarrasses me that these are Americans. There was a time the two great parties could have intellectual debate. Now they ask who believes in evolution, global warming and if the gays even deserve rights. When did the Republican Party become nothing but a bunch of ignorant jackasses that couldn't talk their way out of a first grade science class?
There was actually a time, while I disagreeing with the base philosophies; I felt I could still have a conversation with a right-winger. Now the intellectual response from the right wing has become fingers in the ears with a "Lalala, I can't hear you." Is that really all ya got? Or is it that you are just embarrassed that you've lost all credibility not only in our country but with the rest of the world?
President Bush's approval rating is down to 28%--this is compared to the 24% of our country who also think the "end of times" is coming in 2007. Wow, if this is your base righties, it's time to jump ship. What I want to know is who are the 4% who don't think the end of times is here but still can support this maniacal ignoramus. I've always said stupid and evil are about the worst combination you can get and speaking of stupid and evil I don't see it getting any better with Mitt Romney as the front-runner for the Republican nomination I have to ask, "Dude, where the hell is your party?"
On the flip side I do see a glimmer of hope on the horizon of 2008. If congress can get its feet back on the ground after two vetoes it will be smooth sailing into 2008. The discourse is changing and we are seeing some actual leaders hedging towards the front of the Democratic nominees. As much ammunition our corporate media has, Hilary Clinton is starting to look quite presidential. She's got the bang of the buck and I have been impressed with her lately. My most recent favorite is her quote,
"Are you ready for a government that treats all Americans with dignity and equality no matter who you are and who you love?" -Hilary Rodham Clinton
Baby steps, people. Baby steps.
And while there has been no formal presidential bid—it looks like there is some amazing position from Al Gore. I came across an interview with Al Gore by Dianne Sawyer and I can not tell you how REFRESHING it was to see a politician (how ever "retired") speak his mind with intelligence and candor. This interview is 8minutes but isn't it invigorating to see a leader call America out on the direction we've been falling the last 6 years. Trust me. Take the 8 minutes and watch this entire interview.
Gore/Clinton 2008. Now there's a hot ticket.
