Wow. What an amazing birthday present. Yup, this little ditty of an announcement came on the 6th, my birthday. When did bigotry and personal opinion become so commonplace in our court's rulings? My question to the right wing is: Can we consider these judges "activist" judges since they have ruled on personal opinion and archaic ideals of family structure NOT legality? Also, what about all the single parent homes out there that have busted their a**es raising kids responsibly and well. What a slap in the face to families and to New York State. Here's hoping the legislature of New York State has more common sense and integrity then the Supreme Court. Details below:
From the AP:
"The NY state Supreme Court ruled that the state isn't required to recognize the civil rights of gay people, that it's a decision best left to the legislature. Howard Dean, called the ruling "bigoted and outdated" and Elliot Spitzer, leading candidate for governor of NY has put the legalization of gay marriage on his platform.
The court conceded that "the benefits of marriage are many." But the three-judge plurality wrote that the Legislature could rationally decide, as a matter of social policy, that it is more important to promote the stability that marriage brings within an opposite-sex union than within same-sex unions.
In addition, it said, the Legislature could reasonably believe that "it is better, other things being equal, for children to grow up with both a mother and a father."" -AP
What does this Supreme Court statement have to do with civil liberties? What about families who choose not to have children...Gay or straight? If this line of thinking is permitted then why protect parental rights in single family homes? Why not pose the idea that children would grow up better in single race homes? Reading this decision solidifies for me that we are living in a country of puritanical zealots. This country was created to protect us from this very type of idealism. When a Supreme Court decides what's best for my family not my civil liberties we are in trouble.
In struggle,
-W
